日本防衛省公布新型27DD級神盾飛彈驅逐艦計畫,將以愛宕(Atago)級為藍本變更設計包括排水量由愛宕級7,700噸放大至8,200噸,準備預留空間安裝自製

電磁軌道砲與雷射點防禦系統並採用COGLAG推進系統,Northrop Grumman公司AN/SPQ-9B目標搜索雷達,增強型AEGIS作戰系統與新型協同作戰能力

(CEC),新型反艦飛彈,防空飛彈等裝備,計畫建造2艘預計在2020年和2021年服役.

目前日本海上自衛隊擁有神盾飛彈驅逐艦,包括4艘金剛(Kongo)級,2艘愛宕(Atago)級再加上4艘秋月(Akizuki)級日本神盾艦.
